In the mid 1980's I was working as engraver for a jewelry store in
Westgate mall (Boise Idaho). Every day I drove my rebuilt 1965 Corvair to
work. For haircuts I went to a small salon a few hundred feet from where I
worked. There a stylist named Alee Marsters kept me trimmed. We struck
up conversations and found out she also owned a late series Corvair.
Hers was a convertable. We finally thought it might be fun to start a club
for the vehicles. We inquired in the Idaho Statesman how much to place
an ad in the "Antiques and Classics" want ads would cost. We were
surprised they wanted three times the cost of a normal ad since we were
advertising to form a club!! We swallowed hard and paid $35.00 (1986
dollars). We got a small group going consisting of a College of Idaho
Professor, a mortician, Mr. Don Matthews, Mr. Milo McGown, Alee Marsters
and maybe a couple more.
In those early days we met in a spare room at the local Chevrolet
dealership in downtown Boise. They were very kind to us, I guess
assuming that we might be prospects for a new car purchase from them
someday! Mr. Don Matthews was the go-to guy for mechanical questions
having owned Corvairs almost since their inception. He also was the
faithful editor of the Corvair Connection for many years. The group was a
lot of fun. We always had our annual Summer picnic as a tradition. Later
we had monthly meetings in members homes. It was usually a handful of
members and the host home had to supply the treats and beverages for
the group. A lot of good memories!
